I was born in Fifeshire, Scotland in 1938. The eldest son of a Scottish ploughman. I spent my childhood and early youth within a farmworking community. I left school at the age of 15 after completing my schooling at the Madras College, St.Andrews. I worked until the age of 17 in a papermaking factory and then enlisted in the Radio Electrical Branch of the Royal Navy (1956). After demob in 1965 I was employed for over 16 years as a Test Equipment Design Technician in TV manufacturing (Pye Ltd.,). Following the closure of the Pye factory I was a self employed Electronics Engineer (trading as Argus Electronics) from 1982 until I wound up my business in 2016, aged 77 . I have resided since 1965 in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England - my wife's hometown. My wife Jill and I have three sons (Malcolm, Kenneth and Stuart) and five grandchildren (Billie, Fern ,and Teale - daughters of Stuart. Thomas and Murray - sons of Kenneth).
I am a self taught artist and enjoy painting, mainly in oils, but have dabbled in other forms of artistic pursuits using other mediums/practices such as pyrography, woodcarving, incorporating my electronics knowledge into creating artwork based on light (illuminated panels. lamps, decorative 'stained glass'/plastics work etc.,). The earliest painting I recollect doing was at the age of 10, alas now lost. This depicted a Clydesdale ploughhorse bedecked in full show harness. Paintings of ploughhorses is a subject I return to from time to time, no doubt due to my early admiration and knowledge of those magnificent animals.
The photos above, are left to right - An oil painting of ' Edward (Ned) Ellis with Children' - done from a black and white photograph taken around 1910 by the Lowestoft photographer Harry Jenkins. Ned Ellis was a well known Lowestoft Beachman. The children were the son and daughter (Ford and Waveney) of the photographer. Painted circa 1977. The colours used being my interpretation. This painting was donated to and is exhibited in the Lowestoft and East Suffolk Maritime Museum. The other three photos are of three pyrographic works done on plywood or MDF panels - colour (acrylic) being added during the 'burning' process.
